For expats building a life and career abroad

You Made the Move. Now Make It Work, Inside and Out.

Confidential psychological advising, in English, for expat professionals in Germany and across Europe.

You packed up a life.

You learned a new system.

You kept everything running.

Now you're second-guessing decisions you would have made easily at home, feeling more alone than you expected, and wondering why a move that looked so right on paper feels this heavy.

It doesn't have to. I help expats think clearly, protect their relationships and their energy, and build a life abroad that feels as good as it looks, using evidence-based psychology.

Life Abroad

Moving abroad shouldn't cost you your confidence, your relationships, or your sense of self. It can be the chapter where you grow the most.

You don't need another expat checklist. You need to understand what the move is doing to you.

You've handled the Anmeldung, the bank account, the school forms. On paper, you've arrived.

And yet something is off. The confidence you had at home feels thinner here. Small misunderstandings at work land harder than they should. You and your partner are carrying two different versions of this move, and not always talking about it.

None of this means you made the wrong choice. Relocation strips away the routines, roles, and relationships that quietly held your identity in place. When that scaffolding comes down, older patterns come to the surface.

The good news: patterns can be identified, understood, and changed. That's not motivational thinking. It's psychology.

Second-guessing yourself in a culture where the unwritten rules are different

A professional identity that didn't survive the move intact

Loneliness that looks like being busy

Tension with your partner about who gave up what

The constant background question of whether to stay, go home, or move again

THE WORK

Psychology applied to life between cultures

I'm a U.S.-licensed clinical psychologist, and I made the move to Germany myself. I bring clinical-grade psychological tools to the internal side of living and working abroad: the thinking, emotions, and relationship dynamics that a move tends to amplify.

Rebuild Confidence in a New Context

At home, you knew how things worked and how you came across. Here, feedback is more direct, hierarchy works differently, and your instincts don't always translate. We identify the thinking patterns that turn cultural friction into self-doubt and rebuild them.

Redefine Who You Are Here

A move can quietly take your title, your network, your language, and the version of yourself people recognized. Whether you relocated for your own career or your partner's, we build an identity that belongs to you, not to the place you left.

Strengthen Your Relationship Through the Move

Relocation is one of the biggest stress tests a relationship can face. Often one partner is thriving at work while the other is starting from zero. I help couples communicate under pressure and rebuild a shared picture of the life they're creating.

Decide Your Next Chapter with Clarity

Extend the contract or go home? Buy or keep renting? Change careers or wait? When every option carries loss, decisions stall. We separate the anxiety from the analysis so you can choose with confidence.

Real transformation happens at the intersection of psychological insight and honest self-examination. This is where clarity begins.

WHY THIS IS DIFFERENT

The logistics are handled.

The psychology is the missing piece.

What most expat support does

Relocation services, expat groups, and integration courses help with visas, apartments, language, and paperwork. That's valuable. But none of it explains why you feel like a different person here, or why the adjustment is taking longer than you expected.

What psychological advising does

Goes underneath the logistics to the patterns shaping how you're adjusting: the thinking habits, stress responses, and relationship dynamics a move tends to amplify. Then gives you practical tools to change them, in your own language, with someone who understands both the psychology and the experience.

What Clients Bring

Common Themes in Expat Advisory Work

Confident at Home. Second-Guessing Everything Here.

Meetings where you hold back. Emails you rewrite three times. A creeping sense that you're less capable than you were, when the only thing that changed is the context.

The Move Is Straining Your Relationship

Different adjustment speeds. Different sacrifices. Arguments that are really about the move. The distance grows quietly when no one names it.

Their Career Moved Us. Mine Stopped.

You said yes to the move for good reasons. Now your days lack structure, your expertise feels invisible, and it's hard to say so without sounding ungrateful.

Raising Children Between Two Cultures

Your kids are adapting faster than you are, or struggling in ways you can't fully see. Parenting in a system you didn't grow up in raises questions you never expected.

1

A New Work Culture That Wears You Down

Directness that feels like criticism. Decisions that move at a different pace. Feedback that stings even when you know it isn't personal.

9

Successful, and Wondering What's Next

You've reached goals you once dreamed of. Now you're asking what the next chapter should be, or why this one doesn't feel the way you expected.

Busy, Connected Online, and Still Lonely

Your closest friendships are time zones away, and new ones take longer to build here. The calendar is full, but no one here really knows you yet.

Q

Leading Across Cultures

What worked at headquarters doesn't land here. You're managing across languages and expectations, and your team experiences you differently than you intend.

Who is this for

Expats ready to do more than get through the adjustment.

Expat Professionals & Leaders

You relocated for a role with real responsibility. You're performing, but the adjustment is costing more energy than anyone sees. You're not looking for generic expat tips. You want someone who can help you understand what's actually happening underneath.

Accompanying Partners

You moved for someone else's opportunity. Now you're rebuilding your career, your routine, and your sense of self from scratch. You deserve support that is focused entirely on you.

Expat Couples

You're in this together, but not always experiencing it the same way. You want to come out of this move stronger, not quietly drifting apart.

Philosophy

You Made a Bold Move.

You're Ready to Make It Yours.

Real adjustment doesn't come from waiting it out. It comes from understanding the patterns a move brings to the surface and working with them deliberately. Psychological advising combines clinical depth with practical wisdom, so the insight shows up in your daily life here.

About

About

Danielle McGraw, Ph.D.

I'm a clinical psychologist and executive advisor, and an American who built a new professional life in Germany. I know firsthand what it takes to rebuild credibility, navigate a different business culture, and start over at a high level in a new country.

I hold a PhD in clinical psychology and am licensed in the USA. My background includes work with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and in clinical settings, along with advanced training in evidence-based methods and Gottman-informed relationship work. Today I advise international professionals, leaders, and founders across Germany and Europe who want to think clearly, lead with confidence, and build success that fits the life they're creating here.

I'm based in Bavaria and work with clients in person and online, in English. I'm a member of the BDP (Berufsverband Deutscher Psychologinnen und Psychologen).

Moving abroad is not just a logistical achievement. It is a psychological one. The people who truly thrive here are the ones willing to look inward.

Before We Begin

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Expat Advisory for?

International professionals, leaders, and entrepreneurs building careers in Germany or throughout Europe. Many of my clients are doctors, lawyers, executives, and founders who were highly accomplished at home and want to regain that momentum here.

What do we work on?

Common focus areas include rebuilding professional confidence after a move, leading and working effectively within German business culture, making clear career decisions during transition, and protecting your energy while everything around you is new.

Is this therapy or coaching?

Common focus areas include rebuilding professional confidence after a move, leading and working effectively within German business culture, making clear career decisions during transition, and protecting your energy while everything around you is new.

I was successful at home. Why does Germany feel so hard?

Because so much of what made you effective ran on autopilot, and abroad it no longer does. Everyday tasks demand conscious effort, your credentials may not carry the same weight, and familiar ways of leading can land differently. None of this means you have lost your ability. It means you need a strategy for a new environment.

Is this only for people who just arrived?

No. Some clients come in their first months. Others have been here for years and realize they never fully regained their footing, or are now ready to grow into a bigger role.

Can you help while I wait for my credentials to be recognized?

Yes. I don't handle the administrative process, but I help you use the waiting period strategically: clarifying your goals, maintaining your professional confidence, and planning your next steps so the time builds toward something.

Do you work with couples who relocated together?

Yes. Relocation often puts two ambitious careers on different timelines. I work with couples on career trade-offs, communication under pressure, and keeping the partnership strong while both people rebuild. My approach to couples work is informed by Gottman training.

Are services in English?

All sessions are held in English. I'm an American living in Germany myself, so I understand both cultures and can help you navigate the gap between them. I speak both English and German fluently and session can be conducted in either language.

How do sessions work?

Sessions take place online, or in person in Bavaria by arrangement. Engagements are structured with clear goals and a defined timeframe.

How do we get started?

Book a free clarity call. We'll talk about where you are, what you want to change, and whether working together is a good fit.

Do you accept insurance?

No. Advisory services are private-pay only. This ensures full confidentiality and independence from diagnostic or institutional requirements.

This is where it begins

Your life here can feel as good as it looked when you decided to come. Let's start with a conversation.
